On Diwali morning, Bhopal recorded an AQI of 277, surpassing last year’s 208, with officials warning further rise after fireworks.

Bhopal’s air quality index (AQI) reached 277 on the morning of Diwali, according to measurements taken at the city’s environmental monitoring station. The reading is markedly higher than the AQI of 208 recorded on the same festival day last year, indicating a sharper rise in pollutants this year.

The elevated AQI reflects increased concentrations of particulate matter and other harmful gases, which are typical during the festival season when firecrackers are widely used. Health officials have cautioned residents, especially those with respiratory conditions, to limit outdoor exposure and to keep windows closed.

Authorities anticipate that the AQI could climb further as firecracker celebrations intensify throughout the day. They have urged the public to follow safety guidelines and consider using eco‑friendly alternatives to reduce the pollution burden.

The state pollution control board is monitoring the situation closely and stands ready to issue advisories if air quality deteriorates to hazardous levels.
