Delhi registered its lowest October temperature since 1951 and posted the cleanest monthly air quality in more than ten years, according to official data.

The India Meteorological Department said that Delhi’s temperature on the recent October day fell to the lowest level recorded for the month since the agency began systematic observations in 1951. Meteorologists attributed the dip to a strong western disturbance that brought cooler air from the Himalayas.

In parallel, the Central Pollution Control Board reported that the city’s average Air Quality Index (AQI) for the entire month was the lowest it has been in over a decade. The improvement reflects a combination of favourable weather conditions and sustained emission‑reduction measures.

Officials highlighted that the clear skies and reduced particulate matter have provided temporary relief to residents who have endured severe smog in recent years. However, they cautioned that the trend could reverse if pollution controls are relaxed.

The data underscore the impact of natural weather patterns on Delhi’s notoriously poor air quality, while also reminding policymakers of the need for consistent environmental safeguards.

Authorities will continue to monitor temperature and air‑quality trends closely as the city moves towards winter, a period traditionally associated with higher pollution levels.
