A low-pressure system developing over the Bay of Bengal has intensified into a cyclone, bringing prolonged heavy rainfall to West Bengal’s coastal districts starting October 28.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal has consolidated into a cyclonic storm as of October 28. Satellite imagery shows the system gaining strength with wind speeds approaching the threshold for a severe cyclonic storm.
Meteorologists forecast that the cyclone will move north‑westward, brushing the coastal belt of West Bengal. Districts such as South 24‑Parganas, North 24‑Parganas, and Kolkata’s adjoining suburbs are already experiencing intense downpours, with rain accumulations exceeding 100 mm in some locations.
State authorities have issued advisories urging residents to stay indoors, avoid low‑lying areas, and secure property against possible flooding. Relief teams are on standby, and emergency shelters have been prepared in vulnerable villages along the Sundarbans fringe.
