The government has upgraded the dilapidated route connecting Assam and Arunachal Pradesh to National Highway status, marking a significant development after prolonged neglect.
The stretch of road that links Assam with Arunachal Pradesh has long suffered from poor maintenance and limited infrastructure, hindering travel and trade between the two states. In a recent decision, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways announced that this route will now be classified as a National Highway.
The upgrade comes after years of petitions from local leaders and transport associations who highlighted the road’s strategic importance for both civilian and defense logistics. The new status will facilitate better funding, stricter maintenance standards, and faster rehabilitation work.
Experts say the change will improve connectivity for remote communities, boost tourism, and streamline supply chains for goods moving between the northeastern states and the rest of India. It also enhances the region’s security posture by providing a reliable corridor for military logistics.
The government has outlined a phased plan to widen the road, strengthen bridges, and install proper signage. Work is expected to begin in the next quarter, with completion targeted within two years.
While the upgrade is a positive step, officials caution that sustained investment and regular upkeep will be essential to prevent the road from falling back into disrepair.
