The Assam government has signed a memorandum of understanding to set up the nation’s inaugural public proton beam therapy centre for cancer treatment.

Assam's state administration formalised an MoU aimed at creating India's first publicly funded proton beam therapy facility. The agreement marks a significant step toward expanding advanced cancer care beyond private hospitals and overseas centres.

Proton beam therapy uses high‑energy particles to target tumours with precision, reducing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. By making the technology publicly accessible, the state hopes to lower treatment costs for patients from across the region.

Officials indicated that the centre will be built in partnership with national health agencies, with construction and commissioning expected to commence within the next two years, subject to funding and regulatory clearances.

The initiative aligns with broader government efforts to strengthen oncology services and reduce the need for patients to travel abroad for specialized treatment.
