Women in Basni village, Damoh, broke open hidden bottles of illegal liquor after a protest, prompting authorities to levy fines on both the offenders and the sellers.

In Basni village near Damoh, Madhya Pradesh, a group of women staged a protest against the sale of illicit liquor. The demonstrators entered homes, retrieved concealed bottles and smashed them on the street to draw attention to the problem.

Local authorities responded by imposing a penalty of Rs 5,100 on individuals involved in physical altercations or disturbances caused by drinking, and a separate fine of Rs 11,000 on those found selling the illegal alcohol.

Police officials said the action aims to deter the clandestine trade of spurious liquor, which has been linked to health hazards and public disorder in the region.

The incident underscores growing community frustration over unregulated alcohol distribution and the willingness of residents, particularly women, to confront the issue directly.

Further monitoring and stricter enforcement are expected as the district administration seeks to curb the illegal liquor market.
