The portals of the revered Sikh shrine Shri Hemkund Sahib in Uttarakhand have been shut for the winter season, officials said.
The management of Shri Hemkund Sahib, the high‑altitude Sikh pilgrimage site in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, announced that all entry portals will remain closed for the winter months. The decision, taken in view of heavy snowfall and hazardous road conditions, aims to ensure the safety of pilgrims and staff.
Authorities have advised devotees to plan their visits between May and October, when the trek from Govindghat to the shrine is accessible. During the closure, basic maintenance work will continue, but no religious services or accommodation will be provided.
The closure follows a long‑standing seasonal practice at the shrine, which lies at an elevation of about 4,632 metres. Pilgrims are urged to monitor weather updates and official notices before attempting the trek in the upcoming season.
