Eight wild buffaloes from Kaziranga were released into a large enclosure in Kanha Tiger Reserve’s Supkhar area, marking the species’ first appearance in the reserve in about a hundred years.

In a landmark wildlife‑conservation move, the Madhya Pradesh government has introduced eight wild buffaloes from Kaziranga National Park into the Supkhar zone of Kanha Tiger Reserve. The animals were released into a newly constructed, expansive enclosure designed to mimic their natural habitat and to monitor their adaptation.

The enclosure, surrounded by a high‑strength fence, aims to provide a safe environment while allowing forest officials to study the buffaloes’ behavior, health and interaction with the existing fauna. Officials say the initiative is part of a broader plan to re‑establish the species, which vanished from the region roughly a century ago.

Conservationists view the release as a hopeful sign for biodiversity restoration in central India. If the buffaloes thrive, the project could pave the way for further re‑introductions and strengthen the ecological balance of the reserve, which is already famed for its tiger population.
