WhatsApp has rolled out new parental‑control features that let parents set usage limits for teenage users, but the messages remain encrypted and unreadable to them.
WhatsApp announced the launch of a set of parental‑control tools aimed at users aged 13 to 17. The features, available through the app’s Settings menu, allow guardians to define daily screen‑time limits, set bedtime restrictions and receive weekly activity summaries showing how often the teen opens the app and which features are used.
While the controls give parents greater oversight of usage patterns, they do not grant access to the content of messages. WhatsApp’s end‑to‑end encryption remains unchanged, meaning chats stay private and cannot be read by anyone other than the participants.
The company said the rollout is part of its broader effort to make the platform safer for younger users without compromising the core privacy promise. Privacy experts have praised the added safety layers but note that the inability to view actual conversations may limit parental supervision in cases of online abuse.
The new tools are being rolled out globally and will reach Indian users in the coming weeks, with updates expected to appear automatically for devices running the latest version of the app.
