The West Bengal government’s recently announced industrial land policy is facing legal and activist opposition due to alleged threats to tribal land rights and environmental safeguards.

Kolkata – The West Bengal state cabinet unveiled a new industrial land policy aimed at accelerating manufacturing and attracting investment. Under the scheme, large tracts of forest and agricultural land are earmarked for industrial projects, with the government promising streamlined approvals and tax incentives.

However, tribal community leaders and environmental NGOs have raised objections, arguing that the policy overlooks the rights of indigenous peoples who depend on the land for their livelihood. They contend that the proposed allocations violate the Forest Rights Act and could lead to deforestation and loss of biodiversity.

Legal experts note that the policy may be subject to judicial review if petitions are filed in the Calcutta High Court. The state government has indicated willingness to engage with stakeholders, but officials say the policy is essential for meeting the state's economic targets.

The controversy highlights the broader tension between development ambitions and the need to protect vulnerable communities and ecosystems in India’s eastern region.
