Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that West Bengal will adopt the National Education Policy and launch the PM‑SHRI scheme across the state.

Kolkata, Oct 10 — West Bengal's chief minister Suvendu Adhikari confirmed that the state government will align its school and higher‑education systems with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The move is aimed at modernising curricula, promoting multilingual learning and enhancing vocational training.

In parallel, the administration will introduce the Prime Minister's Scheme for Holistic and Inclusive Development (PM‑SHRI), a central government initiative that provides financial assistance to students from economically weaker sections. The scheme is expected to complement the NEP by expanding access to quality education.

Adhikari said the state machinery is already preparing implementation guidelines and will coordinate with the central Ministry of Education to ensure smooth rollout. Officials anticipate that the combined effort will improve learning outcomes and bridge regional disparities in educational attainment.

The announcement was made during a press briefing at the state secretariat, where the chief minister also urged teachers, parents and civil society to support the reforms. No specific timeline was disclosed, but the government pledged to begin the first phase within the current academic year.
