A stampede during a Durga Puja immersion in West Bengal left 19 dead, prompting the state government to bolster security measures and Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari to review arrangements.

On the evening of 28th September, a stampede erupted during the immersion ceremony of the Durga Puja idol in West Bengal, resulting in 19 fatalities and several injuries. The incident occurred as devotees rushed to witness the final immersion of the deity.

In response, the state government announced an immediate increase in security deployment for all Durga Puja immersion events across the state. Additional police officers, crowd control barriers, and surveillance equipment are being deployed to prevent a recurrence.

Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has personally reviewed the arrangements and expressed deep concern over the tragedy. He ordered a comprehensive audit of crowd management protocols and urged local authorities to adopt stricter safety measures.

This incident follows a series of similar mishaps during religious festivals in the region, prompting authorities to reassess emergency response plans and public safety guidelines for large gatherings.
