The West Bengal government has signed Memoranda of Understanding to spearhead Kolkata's urban renewal and to invest ₹3,000 crore in a comprehensive waste management initiative.

The West Bengal government formalised agreements with the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and the State Pollution Control Board on Tuesday, marking a significant step toward revitalising the city’s infrastructure and environmental health.

The urban renewal MoU outlines a multi‑phase plan to upgrade roads, public transport nodes, parks and civic amenities, with a focus on inclusive development and heritage conservation. The project is expected to create jobs and improve the quality of life for residents.

In parallel, a separate MoU commits ₹3,000 crore to a city‑wide waste management scheme. The plan will modernise collection systems, introduce segregation at source, expand recycling facilities and establish a waste‑to‑energy plant to reduce landfill dependence.

Officials say the initiatives will be rolled out over the next five years, with quarterly progress reports to ensure transparency and accountability.
