Opposition parties in West Bengal have lodged 16.10 lakh appeals against the Election Commission’s decision to include certain voters, raising concerns over the electoral roll’s integrity.
Opposition leaders in West Bengal have filed a staggering 16.10 lakh appeals with the Election Commission of India (ECI) challenging the inclusion of a large number of voters in the electoral roll. The move comes amid growing concerns that the roll may contain errors and duplicate entries, potentially affecting the fairness of upcoming elections.
The appeals, submitted by parties such as the Trinamool Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party, and the Indian National Congress, seek a thorough review of the voter list and the removal of names that they argue do not meet eligibility criteria. They argue that the inclusion of these voters could skew electoral outcomes in key constituencies.
In a statement, opposition spokespersons said the ECI’s decision to add the contested names was made without adequate scrutiny and that the commission must ensure the roll’s accuracy before the next general election. They called for an independent audit of the voter database.
The ECI has yet to respond publicly to the appeals. Analysts suggest that the commission may need to convene a special committee to examine the claims and decide whether to amend the roll. The issue is expected to dominate political discourse in West Bengal as the state gears up for the next electoral cycle.
