The West Bengal cabinet has given the green light to establish 29 women‑only police stations across the state, aiming to strengthen safety and support for women victims of crime.

Kolkata, Nov 2 — The West Bengal government has approved the creation of 29 dedicated women police stations, a move announced by the state cabinet to address gender‑based crimes more effectively. The new stations will be set up in districts where women’s safety concerns have been flagged as a priority, and will be staffed by female officers trained in handling cases of domestic violence, sexual assault and harassment.

The decision follows a series of recommendations from the state's Women and Child Development Department, which highlighted gaps in the existing police infrastructure. By allocating separate facilities, officials expect faster registration of complaints, increased reporting rates, and a more victim‑friendly environment.

Funding for the project will be drawn from the state’s budget for law‑and‑order improvements, with each station equipped with basic forensic and counseling resources. The government has also directed the police hierarchy to appoint senior female officers as in‑charge of the new units, ensuring accountability and specialized oversight.

Implementation is slated to begin in the coming months, with the first batch of stations expected to become operational before the end of the fiscal year. The initiative aligns with broader national efforts to enhance women's safety and empower law‑enforcement agencies with gender‑sensitive capabilities.
