West Bengal’s chief secretary said the state is evaluating a defamation case against Congress MP Mahua Moitra after she called the ruling party a ‘vote chor’.

Kolkata – The chief secretary of West Bengal has indicated that the state government is reviewing the possibility of filing a defamation suit against Congress Lok Sabha member Mahua Moitra. The consideration follows Moitra's recent statement in which she labeled the ruling party as a “vote chor”, a term that translates to “vote thief”.

According to sources within the state administration, the chief secretary’s office is assessing the legal merits of the case and the procedural steps required to proceed. Officials said the decision will hinge on whether the remark is deemed to have caused reputational damage to the government or its officials.

No formal complaint has been lodged yet, and Moitra has not responded publicly to the potential litigation. The development adds to a growing number of confrontations between opposition lawmakers and the West Bengal government over political rhetoric.

If pursued, the case would be filed in a West Bengal civil court, where defamation under Indian law can attract both monetary compensation and, in some instances, criminal penalties. The outcome could set a precedent for how political speech is regulated in the state.
