Local volunteer organisations have begun planting Harihara in major ponds across Mandya and Mysore districts to increase water retention capacity.

Volunteer groups have started a Harihara planting drive in key ponds across Mandya and Mysore districts of Karnataka, aiming to boost the water storage capacity of these reservoirs.

Harihara, a native aquatic plant with a dense root system, helps trap sediment and reduce evaporation, thereby improving the ponds' ability to retain water during dry periods. Volunteers identified several large ponds that have experienced declining water levels in recent years.

The initiative involves community members, school students and NGOs who are preparing the ponds, sowing seeds and monitoring growth. District water resources officials have welcomed the effort, noting its potential to supplement existing water‑conservation measures.

The project will continue through the monsoon season with periodic assessments to gauge its impact. If successful, the model could be replicated in other water‑scarce regions of the state.
