A fight over cemetery land in Tapka Basantpur village of Shajapur district turned violent, with stone‑throwing and stick attacks injuring 26 people, police said.
Shajapur district in Madhya Pradesh witnessed a violent confrontation on Tuesday when two groups clashed over the ownership of a plot of land adjoining a local cemetery in the village of Tapka Basantpur. Participants resorted to throwing stones and wielding sticks, resulting in injuries to 26 individuals, including several women and children, according to local authorities.
The police arrived at the scene after reports of the melee and arrested several persons. A total of 39 people from both sides have been named in FIRs filed by the district police, who are now investigating the cause of the dispute and the extent of the injuries.
Medical teams rushed the wounded to nearby health facilities where they received treatment for cuts, bruises and, in some cases, more serious injuries. The incident has heightened tensions in the community, prompting officials to call for calm and a peaceful resolution of land‑related grievances.
District officials said they will conduct a thorough inquiry and have urged the parties involved to settle the matter through legal channels rather than resorting to violence. The police have also warned that any further escalation will attract stricter legal action.
