Veer Lachit Sena, a regional cultural organization in Assam, has formally appealed to Durga Puja committees to conduct the festival's rituals, prayers and public announcements in Assamese. The group argues that using the state language reinforces cultural identity and ensures wider community participation.
In a statement released ahead of the upcoming festivities, the Sena highlighted that many puja events have increasingly incorporated Hindi and Bengali, which they say marginalises Assamese speakers. They urged temple authorities, cultural clubs and media partners to adopt Assamese for all official communications related to the festival.
The appeal comes at a time when language politics remain sensitive in the northeastern state. While the Sena’s demand is limited to linguistic preference during religious observances, it reflects broader calls for preserving Assamese heritage in public life.
