A convicted murderer from Uttar Pradesh has announced his intention to run for office after the state's High Court temporarily halted his conviction.

The High Court of Uttar Pradesh issued an order staying the conviction of a man sentenced for murder, thereby removing the legal bar that prevented him from contesting elections.

The individual, whose name was not disclosed, has publicly expressed his desire to file nomination papers for the upcoming state assembly polls, asserting that he can serve the public despite his criminal background.

Under Indian law, a person convicted of a crime and sentenced to imprisonment of two years or more is disqualified from contesting elections unless the conviction is stayed or the sentence is reduced. The court's interim order thus restores his eligibility pending a final verdict.

Political analysts note that the move could reignite debate over the inclusion of candidates with serious criminal charges in the democratic process, especially in a state where crime-linked politics has been a recurring concern.

The case remains under judicial review, and the final outcome will determine whether the convict can officially enter the electoral fray.
