The Uttar Pradesh government has prohibited the use of dangerous coolants in milk, citing consumer safety concerns.
The Uttar Pradesh cabinet has issued an order banning the addition of hazardous coolants to milk sold in the state. The directive, announced by the state health department, makes it illegal for any dairy processor or vendor to use substances that can artificially lower milk temperature for extended shelf‑life.
Officials said the move comes after laboratory tests revealed traces of industrial coolants in several milk samples, posing serious health risks such as kidney damage and gastrointestinal disorders. The ban aims to ensure that milk reaching consumers is free from chemical contaminants.
The state food safety authority will conduct surprise inspections of dairy plants, milk collection centers and retail outlets. Violators risk fines and possible suspension of licences. The order will be effective immediately, with a compliance deadline of 30 days for existing stock.
