The United States has announced the formation of a new naval task force aimed at widening its blockade to cut off Iran’s overland trade routes, while a vessel was reported disabled in the Gulf of Oman.
Washington disclosed on Tuesday that a newly created U.S. Navy task force will operate in the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman to intensify the existing maritime blockade against Iran. The force is tasked with monitoring and interdicting vessels suspected of carrying goods that could support Iran’s ground logistics network.
The expansion aims to disrupt overland trade corridors that Iran relies on for essential supplies, including fuel and raw materials, by targeting maritime links that feed those routes. Naval assets, including destroyers and surveillance aircraft, will patrol key chokepoints and coordinate with allied forces in the region.
In a related development, a commercial vessel reported a loss of propulsion and was disabled in the Gulf of Oman shortly after the task force’s deployment. U.S. officials said the incident is under investigation and has not been linked to any hostile action.
The move comes amid heightened U.S.-Iran tensions, with Washington seeking to pressure Tehran over its regional activities. Iran has condemned the expanded blockade as an illegal act of aggression, warning of possible retaliation.
