UP to Consider Uniform Civil Code Ahead of Elections, Live-Ins Legal Status in Focus

Uttar Pradesh has reportedly opened a debate on whether the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will be introduced before the next state elections. The proposal would bring a uniform set of laws governing marriage, divorce, inheritance and other civil matters across all communities.

A key point of contention is the legal status of live-in relationships. Advocates argue that formal recognition would protect the rights of couples who choose to cohabit without marriage, while opponents fear it could undermine traditional family values.
