Heavy, untimely showers across Chhattisgarh have raised concerns over the upcoming paddy harvest, prompting Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel to order an immediate damage assessment.

Heavy rains arrived in several districts of Chhattisgarh earlier this week, catching farmers off guard during a critical phase of the paddy growing season. The unexpected downpour has saturated fields that were nearing maturity, creating conditions that could impair grain filling and overall yield.

Agricultural officials warn that prolonged waterlogging may lead to lodging of the crop, increased disease pressure, and reduced grain quality. With the harvest window narrowing, any further delay could translate into significant losses for the state's rice‑dependent farming community.

Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel responded by directing the state agriculture department to conduct an immediate damage assessment. Teams of officials and extension workers have been dispatched to the most affected districts to quantify losses and recommend remedial measures such as drainage, re‑planting where feasible, and financial assistance for distressed farmers.

The state government has also urged the central Ministry of Agriculture to consider additional relief packages, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding food security and farmer livelihoods in the region.
