The United Nations General Assembly has proclaimed November 27 as the International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage, urging global action.
The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution designating November 27 as the International Day for the Elimination of Child, Early and Forced Marriage. The move aims to spotlight the persistent practice of child and forced unions worldwide and to galvanise governments, civil society and the private sector to intensify preventive measures.
In the resolution, member states were urged to strengthen legal frameworks, improve data collection and expand education and livelihood programmes for vulnerable girls. The UN highlighted that millions of children, especially girls, are still married before reaching adulthood, exposing them to health risks, curtailed education and entrenched poverty.
The new observance joins a calendar of UN‑sponsored days that focus on human rights and gender equality. It provides a platform for advocacy campaigns, policy dialogues and community‑level interventions aimed at eradicating early and forced marriages by 2030, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals.
UN officials called on all nations to mark the day with concrete actions, including public awareness drives and the allocation of resources to protect at‑risk children.
