Former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Uma Bharti urged that prohibition on alcohol be launched as the initial step of Amit Shah’s campaign to make the state drug‑free.

Delhi – Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced a statewide initiative to render Madhya Pradesh free of narcotics, pledging a multi‑phase programme that will target illegal drug trade and substance abuse. The declaration, made during a press conference in New Delhi, outlined a roadmap that includes stricter enforcement, rehabilitation centres and public awareness drives.

In response, former state chief minister Uma Bharti called for the first phase of the plan to focus on alcohol prohibition. Speaking to reporters in Bhopal, Bharti argued that curbing liquor consumption would set a precedent for broader anti‑addiction measures and reduce related social ills. She urged the state government to issue an immediate ban on the sale and manufacture of alcoholic beverages as a priority.

Political analysts noted that Bharti’s demand aligns with her long‑standing advocacy for temperance, while also testing the political will of the current Madhya Pradesh administration. The state government has not yet issued an official statement on the proposed alcohol ban, and officials say they will assess the feasibility of incorporating it into the Nashamukt agenda.

Stakeholders in the liquor industry expressed concern over potential revenue losses, whereas health NGOs welcomed the suggestion, citing evidence that alcohol restriction can lower rates of addiction and related health problems. The next steps of the Nashamukt campaign are expected to be outlined in a detailed action plan later this month.
