The Gujarat Water Resources Department says Ukai Dam's reservoir is about 80% full, marking the first monsoon since 2017 that it hasn't reached full capacity.

The Gujarat Water Resources Department reported that the water level in the Ukai Dam reservoir stood at roughly 80 per cent of its total storage capacity during the current monsoon season. This is the first occasion in seven years that the dam has not reached the 100 per cent mark.

Officials emphasized that, despite falling short of full capacity, the existing water stock is sufficient to meet irrigation, drinking water and other needs across the Tapi district and neighboring areas throughout the monsoon period.

Commissioned in 1972 on the Tapi River, Ukai Dam usually fills to the brim during a robust monsoon. This year’s lower level is linked to a comparatively moderate rainfall pattern, although overall water availability remains within safe limits.

The department will continue to monitor inflows and may release water as required to maintain optimal reservoir levels and prevent any risk of overflow.
