Ujjain Municipal Corporation has announced plans to widen the Mahakal Temple Road from 12 to 24 metres in preparation for the 2028 Simhastha fair.

The Mahakal Temple Road, a key artery leading to the revered Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, will be widened as part of preparations for the 2028 Simhastha fair, a major Hindu pilgrimage attracting millions of devotees.

The municipal corporation has approved a plan to increase the road width from its current 12 metres to 24 metres, effectively doubling the capacity. The expansion will cover the stretch between the main entrance of the temple and the city’s central bus stand.

Officials say the wider road will ease congestion, improve safety for pilgrims and support the expected surge in traffic during the Simhastha, which is scheduled to begin in late 2028.

Work is expected to commence in early 2025, with completion targeted before the fair, after necessary land acquisition and coordination with state authorities.
