Punjab police detained two individuals accused of circulating false information that sparked disturbances at Chitkara University, Patiala.
Patiala police announced the arrest of two persons suspected of deliberately spreading misinformation that led to a temporary disturbance on the Chitkara University campus. The arrests were made on Tuesday following a coordinated operation by the district crime branch after receiving complaints from university officials.
According to the police, the alleged rumors pertained to alleged administrative decisions and safety concerns, which quickly circulated among students via social media and messaging apps. The misinformation triggered a brief gathering of students outside the main administrative block, prompting university authorities to seek immediate police assistance.
Senior Superintendent of Police (Crime) Amit Singh confirmed that the suspects were identified through digital forensic analysis of the messages and were taken into custody without incident. Both individuals have been produced before the Patiala Sessions Court, where they were charged under sections of the Indian Penal Code dealing with criminal intimidation and spreading false information.
The university administration has urged students to verify information before sharing it and has pledged to cooperate fully with law enforcement to prevent similar incidents. The investigation remains ongoing, and further arrests may be made if additional conspirators are identified.
