A high‑speed car hit eight MGNREGA labourers on the Laharagaga‑Jakhal road in Sangrur on Sunday, killing them and injuring several others. The Punjab government has pledged ₹2 lakh for each deceased’s family and will bear medical costs for the injured.
On Sunday, a fast‑moving car rammed into a group of eight MGNREGA workers who were working on the Laharagaga‑Jakhal road near Sangrur, Punjab. The collision proved fatal for all eight labourers, while several by‑standers sustained serious injuries.
Local police confirmed that the vehicle was travelling at high speed when it struck the workers, who were engaged in a government‑funded employment scheme. Emergency services rushed the injured to nearby hospitals, where they are receiving treatment.
In response, the Punjab state government announced an immediate financial assistance of ₹2 lakh for each family of the deceased. Additionally, the authorities have taken responsibility for covering all medical expenses incurred by the injured workers.
The announcement was made by the district administration, which also urged stricter enforcement of traffic rules on rural highways to prevent similar tragedies.
The incident highlights the vulnerabilities faced by labourers employed under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and has prompted calls for better safety measures at work sites.
