An auto‑rickshaw on NH-139 near Mangupur in Patna’s Janipur area collided with a container and plunged into a 20‑foot pit, killing passenger Sonia Kumari and driver Vijay Singh on the spot.
Patna police reported that an auto‑rickshaw traveling on National Highway 139 near Mangupur in the Janipur police jurisdiction collided with a stray container. The impact caused the three‑wheeled vehicle to lose balance and tumble into a pit estimated to be about 20 feet deep.
The auto‑rickshaw, carrying a young woman identified as Sonia Kumari, fell into the depression along with its driver, Vijay Singh. Both victims were found unconscious at the bottom of the pit and were declared dead at the scene by attending emergency personnel.
Rescue teams from the district administration arrived promptly, but the depth of the pit and the severity of injuries limited their ability to save the occupants. Police have cordoned off the area and are conducting a preliminary investigation to determine how the container came to be on the highway.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution on the stretch of NH-139, which has witnessed several incidents involving unsecured loads. The incident underscores ongoing concerns about road safety and the enforcement of transport regulations in Bihar.
