The state of Tripura has logged a 17% shortfall in rainfall this season as the monsoon retreats, raising concerns for agriculture and water resources.

Tripura's meteorological department reported that rainfall across the state fell 17% below the long‑term average for this period. The deficit was recorded as the monsoon withdrew earlier than expected, leaving many districts with below‑normal precipitation.

Agricultural officials warned that the shortfall could affect sowing schedules for kharif crops, particularly paddy and pulses, which rely heavily on timely rains. Irrigation schemes may need to be ramped up to offset the gap.

Water authorities in Agartala and other urban centres are monitoring reservoir levels, which have dipped marginally but remain within manageable limits. Residents have been advised to conserve water as the state prepares for the remainder of the monsoon season.

The state government has pledged to review crop insurance claims and explore supplementary water supply measures to mitigate the impact of the rainfall deficit.
