The northeastern state of Tripura has ensured more than 400 megawatts of electricity for the Durga Puja celebrations and is exporting 72 megawatts to neighboring Bangladesh.
Tripura’s electricity department has mobilised over 400 MW of power to meet the heightened demand expected during the upcoming Durga Puja festivities, one of the region’s biggest cultural events. The additional capacity is being drawn from the state’s hydro‑electric and thermal plants, which have been operating at near‑full output.
In parallel, the state is exporting 72 MW of surplus electricity to Bangladesh under the existing cross‑border power purchase agreement. The export is scheduled to continue throughout the festival period, helping Bangladesh meet its own peak‑load requirements.
State officials said the coordinated supply arrangement not only safeguards uninterrupted power for local celebrations but also reinforces regional energy cooperation. The export revenue is expected to contribute modestly to Tripura’s fiscal resources while supporting grid stability across the northeastern corridor.
The move comes as part of Tripura’s broader strategy to position itself as a reliable power hub in the northeast, leveraging its abundant hydro resources to serve both domestic and neighboring markets.
