The Tripura state government has begun distributing identification cards to agar cultivators and traders to formalize the sector.
Tripura's Department of Agriculture has launched a scheme to provide official identification cards to individuals involved in the cultivation and trade of agar, a valuable medicinal fungus. The move is intended to bring greater transparency and structure to the agar value chain, which has traditionally operated with limited documentation.
The ID cards will serve as proof of registration, enabling growers and traders to access government schemes, subsidies, and market information more easily. Officials say the cards will also help in monitoring production volumes and ensuring quality standards across the state.
State authorities expect the initiative to encourage more systematic record‑keeping and to strengthen the bargaining power of small‑scale agar producers in national and international markets. The rollout will continue until all eligible participants in Tripura receive their cards.
