A Tribal Artisan Empanelment Mela was inaugurated in Gangtok to help Sikkim artisans gain wider market access and connect with buyers across the region.
The Tribal Artisan Empanelment Mela opened in Gangtok, bringing together tribal and local craftsmen from across Sikkim. Organized by regional authorities, the fair aims to create a formal platform where artisans can register, showcase their work and interact directly with traders and buyers.
The primary objective of the mela is to bridge the gap between remote craft communities and mainstream markets. By facilitating empanelment, officials hope to streamline supply chains, improve price transparency and enable artisans to tap into larger commercial networks.
During the event, participants displayed a variety of traditional products, including hand‑woven textiles, bamboo artefacts and indigenous jewellery. Attendees were encouraged to explore collaborative opportunities, seek bulk orders and receive guidance on branding and certification.
Stakeholders indicated that the mela will be an annual fixture, with plans to expand its reach to other districts in the coming years, thereby strengthening Sikkim’s cultural economy.
