The Telangana government will approach the Union government for financial assistance to offset losses caused by the El Nino weather pattern.
Hyderabad, Oct 2 2026 – The state government of Telangana announced its intention to seek a special grant from the Union government to compensate farmers and other stakeholders affected by the recent El Nino-induced drought. The ministry highlighted that prolonged high temperatures and erratic rainfall have reduced sowing areas and lowered yields across key districts.
According to officials, the estimated agricultural loss runs into several hundred crore rupees, prompting the state to draft a formal request under the central disaster relief framework. The appeal will be presented by the Chief Minister’s office in the coming days.
The move comes as the central government reviews climate‑related assistance schemes for states facing severe weather shocks. Telangana hopes the request will be approved swiftly to enable timely relief distribution and prevent further distress among rural communities.
State agricultural officers are already coordinating with local panchayats to identify the most affected villages and to channel any forthcoming funds directly to beneficiaries.
The request underscores growing concerns among Indian states about the economic impact of climate anomalies and the need for coordinated fiscal responses.
