The Telangana government has announced that its ration shops may start selling subsidised groceries, aiming to ease the cost burden on low‑income families.
The state’s Public Distribution System (PDS) has long been the backbone of food security for millions of Telangana residents. In a recent press briefing, officials said that ration shops could begin offering subsidised grocery items, a move intended to reduce out‑of‑pocket expenses for the poorest households.
The proposal would allow shops to sell staples such as rice, wheat, and pulses at prices below the current market rates, with the subsidy coming from state funds.
If implemented, the scheme could lower the cost of essential food items for low‑income families, helping to improve nutrition and reduce food insecurity across the state.
The government has said it will roll out a pilot in select districts before a wider launch, and will monitor the impact on both shop revenues and consumer welfare.
