The Telangana Prisons Department has started an open schooling scheme to provide formal education to inmates across the state’s prisons.
The Telangana Prisons Department announced the launch of an open schooling initiative aimed at delivering formal education to prisoners. The scheme will be implemented in partnership with the state’s open school system, covering basic literacy, secondary level subjects and selected vocational courses.
Officials said the programme is designed to enhance inmates' skill sets, improve literacy rates and aid their social reintegration after release. Eligible prisoners from all correctional facilities in Telangana will be enrolled, with classes conducted within prison premises by qualified teachers.
The department expects the initiative to complement broader government efforts to promote education and rehabilitation in the criminal justice system, thereby reducing recidivism and supporting smoother post‑release transitions.
