The Tamil Nadu government announced plans to install 1,000 new automatic rain gauges to improve weather monitoring and flood forecasting.

The state government of Tamil Nadu has approved the deployment of a thousand automatic rain‑gauging stations throughout the region. The initiative aims to modernise the existing network of manual rain gauges and provide real‑time precipitation data to the meteorological department. By automating data collection, authorities expect faster and more accurate flood warnings, especially during the monsoon season.

The new instruments will be installed at strategic locations covering coastal, inland and hill zones, ensuring comprehensive coverage of the state's diverse climate zones. The project is slated to begin in the coming weeks, with installation work to be carried out by the state’s water resources and disaster management agencies in coordination with the Indian Meteorological Department.

Officials said the enhanced monitoring capability will also support agricultural planning and water‑resource management, helping farmers and policymakers make informed decisions based on precise rainfall information.
