The Tamil Nadu government has revised autorickshaw fares for the first time in 13 years, citing rising fuel costs and inflation.

The state cabinet approved a new fare structure for autorickshaws on Wednesday, marking the first revision since 2011. Under the new schedule, the base fare per kilometre will rise by roughly 10 to 12 percent, with a modest increase in the flag‑down rate as well.

Transport officials said the adjustment reflects the sustained rise in diesel and petrol prices, as well as broader inflationary pressures that have squeezed drivers' earnings. The revised rates will come into effect from 1 November 2026, giving operators a short window to update meters and inform passengers.

The Association of Auto Drivers welcomed the move, stating that the previous fares had become untenable for many who depend on daily trips for livelihood. However, some commuter groups expressed concern that higher fares could burden low‑income passengers, especially in urban corridors.

The transport department will monitor compliance through periodic inspections and has instructed all autorickshaw unions to display the updated fare chart prominently inside each vehicle.
