The Tamil Nadu government has announced fixed wage rates for handloom weavers producing new Pongal dhotis and sarees, aiming to standardise earnings across the sector.
The state government of Tamil Nadu issued an official notification setting standard wage levels for artisans weaving the newly designed Pongal dhotis and sarees. The move is intended to protect weavers from wage fluctuations and ensure a fair income for those engaged in the traditional handloom sector.
Under the new guidelines, the wages are fixed per piece of fabric, with rates varying according to the complexity of the design and the type of yarn used. The government said the rates will be reviewed periodically to reflect changes in raw material costs and market demand.
Industry bodies welcomed the decision, noting that a transparent wage structure could boost production of festive garments and help sustain the livelihoods of thousands of weavers in Tamil Nadu's rural districts.
