Tamil Nadu CM Vijay allocates new cars and driver allowance for each MLA

Chief Minister Vijay disclosed a new welfare package for the state's legislators, stating that each Member of the Legislative Assembly will be provided with a brand‑new automobile. The announcement was made during a press conference in Chennai, where the CM highlighted the move as a step toward improving legislators' mobility and efficiency.

Under the scheme, the government will procure a standard model car for every MLA and allocate an annual driver allowance of Rs 75,000. The allowance is intended to cover fuel, maintenance and driver remuneration, ensuring that legislators can attend constituency duties and assembly sessions without logistical hurdles.

While the opposition has questioned the fiscal prudence of the expenditure, the ruling party defended the decision as an investment in governance. Analysts note that the total outlay will depend on the number of MLAs and the specific vehicle models chosen, but the policy reflects a broader trend of state governments enhancing perks for elected representatives.
