The Tai Ahom Youth Parishad has asked for a Rs 5,000 crore flood relief package and warned the government that delaying Scheduled Tribe status for the community could spark protests.
The Tai Ahom Youth Parishad, a community organization representing the Tai Ahom ethnic group in Assam, has formally demanded a flood relief package worth Rs 5,000 crore from the state and central governments.
The demand comes amid recurring floods that have devastated large parts of Assam's low‑lying districts, causing loss of life, displacement and damage to agriculture and infrastructure. The Parishad says the amount is needed to fund embankments, early‑warning systems and rehabilitation of affected families.
In addition to the financial demand, the group warned that the government’s delay in granting Scheduled Tribe (ST) status to the Tai Ahom community could trigger wider protests. The Parishad said the ST status is essential for the community’s socio‑economic development and for accessing affirmative‑action benefits.
Officials from the Assam state government have not yet responded publicly to the demand, while the central Ministry of Tribal Affairs is reportedly reviewing the ST status application.
