Veterinary officials have confirmed the presence of the contagious Surra disease in Manipuri ponies in Kakching district, Manipur.
Veterinary authorities in Manipur have officially confirmed that the Surra disease, a contagious bacterial infection affecting equines, has been identified in Manipuri ponies in the Kakching district. The diagnosis was made after samples from affected animals were tested by the state animal husbandry department.
Surra, caused by the bacterium *Burkholderia mallei*, can lead to fever, respiratory distress and, in severe cases, death of the animal. The emergence of the disease in a region where ponies are integral to agriculture and transport raises concerns among livestock owners and local officials.
The department has urged pony owners to isolate symptomatic animals, seek immediate veterinary assistance, and adhere to recommended biosecurity measures. Ongoing surveillance and treatment efforts are being coordinated to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread to other equine populations in the state.
