The Supreme Court has asked the Union Government and all state governments to provide details on the vacancies and operational status of State Human Rights Commissions.

The Supreme Court, in a recent order, has sought responses from the Centre and all state governments regarding the vacancies and functioning of State Human Rights Commissions.

The Court highlighted that several commissions have been operating with unfilled posts, raising concerns about their effectiveness.

It directed the Centre to submit a comprehensive report within a specified timeframe and asked each state to detail the number of vacancies, reasons for delays, and steps taken to fill them.

The Court also emphasized the need for timely appointments to ensure the commissions can perform their mandate of safeguarding human rights.
