The Supreme Court dismissed a petition seeking the relocation of captive elephant Madhuri in Gujarat, prompting PETA India to label the verdict disappointing.

The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed a petition that sought to move the captive elephant known as Madhuri to a wildlife sanctuary in Gujarat. The plea, filed by animal‑rights advocates, argued that the elephant’s current conditions were inadequate and that rehabilitation would ensure her welfare.

The court’s order upheld the existing custodial arrangement, stating that there was insufficient evidence to mandate a transfer. As a result, Madhuri will continue to remain under the care of the present handlers in the state.

PETA India immediately expressed disappointment, saying the decision undermines the cause of animal welfare and sets a concerning precedent for the treatment of captive wildlife. The organization urged the government to revisit policies on elephant care and consider more humane alternatives.

Legal experts noted that the ruling reflects the judiciary’s cautious approach in cases where relocation logistics and the animal’s health are contested. The matter may be revisited if new evidence emerges regarding Madhuri’s wellbeing.
