The apex court ruled that filing a criminal case cannot be employed as a tool to compel a marriage, emphasizing legal safeguards against coercion.

The Supreme Court delivered a landmark judgment clarifying that a criminal proceeding cannot be used as a means to force a marriage. The bench observed that the law must protect individual autonomy and that leveraging criminal charges to compel personal decisions undermines constitutional rights.

Petitions challenging the practice were heard after several instances where parties alleged that criminal complaints were filed merely to pressure a marriage. The Court stressed that while criminal law addresses genuine offences, it must not become a tool for personal coercion.

In its order, the Court directed lower courts and law enforcement agencies to scrutinise the intent behind filing criminal cases in matrimonial disputes, ensuring that the provisions are not misapplied. The ruling is expected to provide clearer guidance to litigants and prevent misuse of criminal statutes in family matters.
