Hundreds of students in Anupur halted traffic on the Amarkantak‑Riwa road, demanding the removal of a gate and a boundary wall after a private construction plan proposed a shortcut through hostel land.
Anupur, Madhya Pradesh – Around a few hundred students occupying the hostel campus staged a road blockade on the Amarkantak‑Riwa highway on Saturday. The protest, known locally as a "chakkajam," was aimed at stopping a proposed private construction that would carve a passage through the hostel's land.
The demonstrators removed the existing gate and called for a permanent boundary wall to protect the campus from encroachment. They argued that the shortcut would compromise the safety and integrity of the hostel premises and set a precedent for further private take‑overs.
Local authorities responded by stating that they will review the agreement related to the road and assess the current condition of the pathway before any decision is taken. Officials said a meeting with student representatives is planned to address the concerns.
The protest has drawn attention from nearby residents and other educational institutions, highlighting growing tensions over land use and private development in the region.
No injuries were reported, and traffic on the highway remained disrupted for several hours before police cleared the blockade following the students' demands for a dialogue.
