The southwest monsoon over southern India has been markedly deficient, prompting officials to warn of water stress and potential drought conditions across the region.
The Indian Meteorological Department said the southwest monsoon over the southern peninsula this season has been well below normal, leaving large parts of the region short of rain.
States such as Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala are reporting falling reservoir levels and stressed irrigation systems as crops await adequate moisture.
Water‑resource officials warned that prolonged shortfalls could force water‑use restrictions, affect hydro‑electric generation and push farmers to rely more heavily on groundwater.
The central government is monitoring the situation closely and has indicated that drought‑relief measures could be activated if the deficit persists.
