The Vice‑Chancellor of Sher‑e‑Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir announced that the university will prepare a comprehensive sustainable mountain policy for Jammu & Kashmir.

In a recent statement, the Vice‑Chancellor of Sher‑e‑Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST‑K) confirmed that the institution will formulate a sustainable mountain policy for the state of Jammu & Kashmir. The initiative aims to address the unique ecological and socio‑economic challenges faced by the region's high‑altitude areas.

The proposed policy is expected to integrate scientific research on mountain agriculture, water resource management, and climate‑resilient livelihoods. By leveraging the university's expertise in agronomy, horticulture and environmental science, the draft will seek to promote sustainable farming practices that protect fragile ecosystems while enhancing farmer incomes.

SKUAST‑K plans to collaborate with state authorities, local communities and other research bodies to ensure the policy reflects ground realities. The university's role as a knowledge hub positions it to provide data‑driven recommendations for land use, soil conservation and renewable energy adoption in mountainous zones.

While a detailed timeline has not been disclosed, the Vice‑Chancellor emphasized that the policy will be presented to the Jammu & Kashmir government for consideration, marking a strategic step toward long‑term environmental stewardship and rural development in the hills.
